The “Waldo” & The “Charles”
The actual awards that winners will receive have a great story behind them, which is apt, as we really wanted to create meaningful and rare objects to reflect the weight of the awards.
The idea of the Waldo was born back around 2000, when we registered the idea to create an award called the “waldo” – little did we know that he would have to remain on paper in a drawer until 2011. When it came time to make “Waldo” a reality, we had been through several artists, many drawings and much frustration.
Finally, we settled on the image you will see on the website as the concept. We were drawn to the idea that he has two heads – his real personality, and his “comedy” head. We also loved the idea of a mirror-finish, so that Waldo is permanently reflecting.
Many, many manufacturers told us they were not able to create Waldo – until we found Chris Winspear… Chris generated a 3-D computer model, and reworked it with us until we approved. Then he set about milling Waldo out of wax, he then created a mould, and from this generated a master – from this, bronze statuettes will be cast, and then plated in chrome, with the gold finish on the jester hat being the final stage… this process is very costly, and each statuette will finally cost around R10 000.00.
We are very proud that an idea conceived 11 years ago is finally about to be born… and we can’t wait for Waldo’s first birthday…
The Orpheo Twins of Hyde Park, including Pietro, the third twin, are great friends of comedy. Their artistry in creating fine one-off pieces in precious stones and metal is almost secondary to their love for life and immense capacity for laughter.
When we discussed the idea of a piece of jewelry for Lifetime Achievers and Comic’s Choice category winners, they went away and gave it some real thought. The result is the “Charles” – a raw white gold jester skull pinky ring with white diamonds in the eye sockets. The ring will be sized to each winner and, when worn, will signify the wearer as a recipient of on of the two highest accolades a cmic can possibly win.
The raw white gold is a dull, light yellow colour – not often left unplated, it signifies the raw talent needed to be a top comic – the solid gold composition refers to the quality of work produced, the skull represents resolve and endurance through the tough developmental years, and the fact that all great comics have already died many times. The jester hatis also a crown of sorts and signifies that the wearer has reached the top of the profession, but that we must never take ourselves too seriously. The diamonds in the eyes represent the unique view comics have of the world – the diamonds have been added as a gift from Orpheo, and we are very grateful.
Finally, the name of the piece “Charles” – is a tribute to one of the greatest comics of all time – Charlie Chaplin. The “Charles” will only be produced for award winners, and will not be made available commercially. We will notify comics when the “Charles” master ring is ready and on display at the Hyde Park Store.
